Order of Inspector Troy Books
Inspector Frederick Troy is the protagonist in a series of historical crime fiction novels by American novelist John Lawton. Although we know Inspector Troy’s first name is Frederick, he prefers not to be addressed as such, disliking any form of his given name. Inspector Troy is an investigator on Scotland Yard’s murder squad. The series starts out during World War II. The film rights for the series have been optioned by Columbia Pictures.
The Inspector Troy series began in 1995 with Black Out. The series is currently ongoing. Below is a list of John Lawton’s Inspector Troy books, sorted both by year of publication and in chronological order:

In historical chronological order, Second Violin should be first, as it is mostly set in 1938-40. The first half focuses on Troy’s older brother, Rod–we don’t meet the young Freddie Troy till about halfway through, so it could be read first to get the family background. Another confusing feature of the series is that two of the books have different titles in the US and Britain: The British Riptide is Bluffing Mr Churchill in the US, and Blue Rondo is Flesh Wounds. This can be confusing if you are looking for used copies. Love the series for character development/historical detail–not faced paced action, just the opposite, but some shockers do keep you guessing till the final pages.
