Mary H.K. Choi is a Korean-American author best known for her YA novels, Emergency Contact and Permanent Record. In addition to her work as an author, Mary is also a culture correspondent for Vice News Tonight. She has also worked as a columnist for Wired Magazine and Allure.

Choi was born in Seoul, South Korea, but her family moved to Hong Kong before her first birthday. She spent the early part of her life there until her family moved to the United States when she was 14. She attended the University of Texas at Austin where she majored in Textile and Apparel. After college she would go on to New York where she worked at Mass Appeal magazine and worked her way up to editor.

Emergency Contact was Mary H.K. Choi’s first novel and the one that put her on the map. The book follows Penny Lee who is excited to get out of high school and head to Austin, Texas for college. She never had a boyfriend in high school and basically considered it to be a nonevent in her life. She’s excited to leave this life behind and head off to college. She meets Sam who thinks he has a bright future as a director, but right now is going through hell. He works at a cafe and sleeps there too. The two exchange numbers and begin a texting relationship that makes them inseparable except for the whole seeing each other part

Choi followed that book up with Permanent Record. This book sees a “meet cute” between Pablo, a college dropout, and Leanna Smart, a pop superstar. You wouldn’t think the two would hit it off, but they aren’t exactly into letting other people define who they are or live up to other’s expectations. The two will discover who they are together and what they want to be, even as things get complicated.
