Nicole Flattery is an Irish author who debuted on the scene with her collection, Show Them A Good Time. That book was named a most anticipated book of the year by Entertainment Weekly, The A.V. Club, and LitHub.

Flattery has written for numerous publications including The Stinging Fly, The White Review, The Dublin Review, BBC Radio 4, The Irish Times and Winter Papers. Nicole is a graduate of the master’s program in Creative Writing at Trinity College, Dublin. She is now located in Galway where she lives and writes.

Show Them A Good Time is Nicole Flattery’s collection of stories about the strange worlds that women inhabit and the parts that they must play. The collection of stories is what put her on the map as the debut is both fiercely original and brilliant. The book manages to tell the stories of a wide variety of women and what their restrictive roles can do to them. Some of the women in her book are: the celebrity’s girlfriend, the widower’s second wife, the lecherous professor’s student, and the corporate employee. Each story in the collection deconstructs the conventions of genre to serve up strange realities and tell about the lives of these women. One story is called Not the End Yet and covers the world of internet dating through the unique lens of the apocalypse. While Sweet Talk tells of the mysterious disappearance of a number of local women sets the scene for a young girl to confront the dangerous uncertainties of her own sexuality. The story that is getting the most attention in this collection is probably Abortion, A Love Story where two college students in a dystopian campus reconfigure the stories of their bodies in a fraught academic culture.
