That Kind of Mother is the story of a first-time mother named Rebecca Stone. She loves her son, but she is also deeply overwhelmed. As she struggles to juggle the demands of motherhood and living her own life, she ends up reaching out to Priscilla Johnson for help as a nanny. Her help changes Rebecca’s life instantly, but also makes her confront blind spots in her privilege as Priscilla is black and she is white. Rebecca has a profound connection to her and it changes who she is. When Priscilla dies in childbirth, Rebecca steps forward to adopt the child but finds herself unprepared for what raising a black child as a white mother means.
Alam is also the author of Leave the World Behind. In this book, Amanda and Clay are looking for a break from New York City life and head to to a rental with their children in a remote corner of Long Island. Their relaxation doesn’t last long as the home owners, Ruth and G.H., pound on their door in a panic. They say that New York City has suffered a blackout, but the couple are unsure to believe them with no TV or internet access. The couple must figure out if they can trust this older couple and find out if this is a truly safe place for their family.
