If You Like Horst Christian Books, You’ll Love…
Children to a Degree is the first book in the Growing Up Under the Third Reich series. The book follows a boy named Karl Veth, the eldest of three children, who grows up in Germany as Hitler has his grip on the country. Everyone in the country at the time was fed Nazi propaganda, but not all of them bought into it. Karl is good at school, but often finds him questioning these things. Karl’s father and grandfather have their own opinions that contradict what he is taught in school, opinions that they pass onto Karl. However, German law mandates all children must become members of the Hitler Youth and at the age of 10, Karl enters the Jungvolk.
Christian is also the author of the Journey to America series which begins with Postwar Survivor. The book sees Karl after the war has ended as he tries to help his family survive in the war-torn country. His father insists that he behave like a responsible adult, leave home, and learn a trade so he can provide for himself. He ends up on a fishing vessel where he meets up with a kind ship’s captain who helps to set him on a course that will change his future.
