Last Read, Currently Reading, Next To Read III

Last month I asked, “What was the last book you read?  What are you reading now?  And what will you read next?”. Here are the answers from the September newsletter:

lupopat: Last book I read was Dead Man’s Wake by Paul Doiron and am now reading The Wayward Prince by Leonard Goldberg. I have waiting for me-The Unquiet Bones by Loreth Anne White.

Christine: Last read, Maria a novel on Maria Von Trapp by Michelle Moran – it was very interesting and I liked it (and FYI I was just up that way in Stowe by their lodge today – the hills are alive!). Currently reading A Calamity of Souls by David Baldacci and I am half way through, and it is good so far. Next book I plan to read is Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty since it is waiting for me at the library to come pick up.

Joyce: Thank you for your monthly publications. I anxiously await them and devour every line and review.
The last book I read was Break Every Rule by Brian Freeman. My husband and I just returned to Florida after a couple months in MN and on a long car trip, I typically select a book I think we would both enjoy, and I read it aloud. We both thoroughly enjoyed this one. I am currently reading The Final Round by Ernest Dempsey. I had read good reviews somewhere and was intrigued by the golf theme. As I am a golfer and sucker for golf books, I decided to put it ahead of A Place to Hide by Ronald Balson who I love and will get to post haste.

Chris: I’m with you on the pure enjoyment of reading in the cooler fall weather, Graeme! One of my favorite places to read when the leaves turn is on our front porch, shaded by majestic oak trees. The last book I read was “If the tide turns” by Rachel Rueckert (interesting perspective on how pirates are created, among other things). The book I’m reading now is “Terrace story” by Hilary Leichter (quite an unusual premise-​has a time travel twist so far). The next book I want to read is “This is happiness” by Niall Williams (one of those books that people love and recommend a lot. We’ll see if I feel the same way).​

vhreads: Finished – Angel of Vengeance by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child (chilling but unbelievable at times)

Almost done – Passions in Death by J.D. Robb – Im to the point where Dallas and Peabody know who did it, but don’t have enough real evidence to arrest them.

Next on the list: Bookshops & Bonedust by Travis Baldree – after the last two, I need some light humor

I also have a romance list (I usually have two or three books going at the same time)

Donna: Last book read was Alias Grace by Margaret Atwood. Currently reading Harry Hole series-The Leopard. Plan to reread The Cat Who series by Lillian Jackson Braun

Kenicia: The last book I read was Just Add Water, Katie Ledecky’s autobiography. I just finished it this morning, so I haven’t started my next book yet. I plan to read Game for Five by Marco Malvaldi next. I am listening to Don Quixote by Cervantes right now. I’m over halfway through. I tried it once before, but I disliked the narrator. This narrator is Simon Vance, and it’s much better.

Jessica: The last book I read was The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins. The book I’m currently reading is Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler. I am also reading Beyond the Pill by Jolene Brighten. The next book I am reading/listening to is The Future by Naomi Alderman.

Shirley: Last Book
“All the Colors of the Dark” by Chris Whitaker
One of the best books I have read in a long time! The author presents simply an emotional salad. I have only said this once before about an author “this author’s writing is like reading poetry”. This author is now on the same pedestal as my favorite author, John Hart, whose prose I have also compared to reading poetry. Where have you been John Hart … It has been over 3 years!

Current Book
” Jack’s Boys” by John Katzenbach
I am currently only half way through. A great author! I have read almost all of his books. It is a little brutal but no more than others in the same mystery/serial killer genre. You can always count on this author to suddenly surprise you. I have already encountered one chapter that really made me angry. And, yes, this author can certainly provoke an emotional response. I had to take a breather for a minute. I knew where the author was going with this particular scene and why but it was definitely difficult to stick with it. Again, I always look forward to the surprises from this author.

Next Book
“Still See You Everywhere” by Lisa Gardner
If you are a mystery reader and have never read this author … What are you waiting for! I love this author and have read every one of her books.
This is an author that I would definitely pre-order without even reading the synopsis … Might just take a peek because I can’t wait to see what the storyline is going to be.

Hollins: The last book I read was “The Dark Wives” by Ann Cleeves.
The book I am currently reading is “Table for Two” by Amor Towles.
The next book I intend to read is “My Life” by Golda Meir.

Richard: What was the last book you read? The Sherlockian by Graham Moore
What are you currently reading? Alias Emma by Ava Glass

Joy: The last book I read-BOOMSTERS by David Marks

The book I am now reading is RED SKY MOURNING by Jack Carr Excellent, so far

The book I plan to read is the next one from Sandra Brown. It could be a book about MUD and I would read it. She is one odf my favorite writers!

Kathy: The book I last read was The Secret Hours by Mick Herron. I’ve read everything he has written.
The book I am reading now is A Death in Cornwall by Daniel Silva.
I’m looking forward to reading Richard Osmond’s We Solve Murders.

Sue: I recently finished Devil and the Dark Water by Stuart Turton (I read the 7-1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle and just had to read something else by Turton).

Now reading The Last Murder at the End of the World, also by Stuart Turton.

I think he gets a prize for creative names of his books. Maybe another idea for comments?

The next book I’m going to read is The Second Rule of Ten by Gay Hendricks and Tinker Lindsay. (I read The First Rule of Ten and wanted to read more about this character).

Susan:
The last book I read was The Stars Don’t Lie, by Boo Walker. I loved it! That was the first book I had read by him, but I will be reading more.

The book I am reading now is The Reunion, by Meghan Quinn, which is a Prime Free book. I like it, but there is a lot of angst in it. I am about 45% through the book and will reserve judgment until I finish it.

The next book I plan on reading is What Have You Done? , by Shari Lapena. I usually love her books, but I am a little put off by your comments in the newsletter. I hope I think it’s better than you did.

Corinne: 
Last book I read was actually a 4-book ‘box set’ on audiobook, ‘The Orbs’ by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. I got through the first three but then had to give up partway into the 4th book due to not being able to stand one more minute of the narrator. The books themselves were just OK. Something to listen to at work.

Currently reading ‘Birds of Prey’ by Wilbur Smith (a favorite reread) and also ‘The Shadow Land’ by Elizabeth Kostova. I like her books but be ready for a very slow burn!

Next read will likely be ‘Monsoon’ by Wilbur Smith. You’ll like this story Graeme: I went to Scotland in 2003 to rent a bicycle and rode around the country for 10 days. I stopped in a used book store in Edinburgh and there I found my first ever Wilbur Smith book (probably Birds of Prey, or possibly ‘Hungry as the Sea’ as I was in the US Navy when I was young and LOVE nautical stories) and I have been hooked on his books ever since!

Steve: The last book I read was Deadly Shadow by Kim Cresswell. Not my usual kind of read but OK.

I’m currently reading Claire Whitcomb Western Collection: Retribution, Gunslinger, Legend by D.V. Berkom. It is a boxed set of Western novellas. So far I am enjoying it.

The next book I am planning to read is Kill Crime by Mike Slavin. It has been on my TBR shelf for a couple of years now and I just downloaded the third of the series.

Brian: The last book I read Dark Vector Clive Cussler/Graham Brown always a good read
Reading now Black Cherry Blues James Lee Burke, The Demon of Unrest Erik Larson and The Gray Ghost Murders by Keith McCafferty a series I just started and finding enjoyable. My next book not sure of yet.

Rosemary: The book I finished yesterday is Dragoncat Book 6: A Cat’s Guide to Vanquishing Evil by Chris Behrsin.
Love cats and dragons and this series is written from the Cat’s perspective. The cat is removed from our dimension (Wales actually!) and becomes a dragon riding hero.

Started a Cat Cafe cozy mystery (book 8) by Cate Conte: Shock and Paw.

2 books coming next week so not sure which one will get read first. I’ll get through both of them very quickly.
Either Warrior Cats Super Edition by Erin Hunter (met her on a book tour….lovely person): Ivypool’s Heart or
Alien: Uncivilized War by Brendan Deneen.
Love anything to do with Zenomorphs and Predators. I wish they would make an Alien movie about The Phalanx by Scott Sigler rather than that pathetic drivel that was Alien Romulus just released. Phalanx is so original and doesn’t follow the usual Alien’s formula. Would make an original Alien movie.
So, I probably will read Uncivilized War first to get my Alien fix.

Bfredericks: The last book I read was Black Bird Oracle by Deborah Harkness. It continues the All Souls trilogy. It was wonderful and hard to put down. Right now I’m reading Angel of vengeance by Preston & Child. My next read will be something off my numerous hold list at the library. I’m hoping for the new J. D. Robb book.

sven: Last book was Clete by Jame Lee Burke. Currently reading the Long Shot Trial by William Deverell. Next book is Moscow Exile by john Lawton.

Toni: It’s a tie because I listen during the day and I read at night. So I just finished listening to Queen of Chaos by Amelia Hutchins. Her books are pretty much rated X but her stories are so good. This book is part of her Legacy of the Nine Realms series. And I just finished reading Midlife Bounty Hunter by Shannon Mayer. I ended up really enjoying this book about an older woman being “written off” by the younger generation and showing she has a lot to offer.
I am now reading (listening to) Karin Slaughter’s This is Why We Lied, part of her Will Trent series. I like the books so much better than the TV series but I do watch and enjoy the TV series. To me, they are 2 different things with similarities. I am reading the 2nd book of the Forty Proof series- Midlife Fairy Hunter which has been just as entertaining as the first book.
Next up for listening is Double Blast by Gretchen Archer. This is part of her Davis Way series which is a very entertaining series full of stuff going on! Even though there is something always going on, I consider it a light read. And for reading, I’ll either go to the 3rd book of Forty Proof, Midlife Demon Hunter, or I will pick up one of the many unread books of mine in Kindle, Outlaw’s Promise by Helena Newbury.

Nancy: The last book I read was Firefly Lane by Kristen Hannah.
I am currently reading The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez.
I’m planning on reading Mind Games by Nora Roberts.

Betty: > What was the last book you read?
The Queen of Poisons by Robert Thorogood, read by Nicolette McKenzie: Marlow Murder Club series. It’s fine but I didn’t find it as interesting as the others in the series. Read it if you want to keep up with what is happening with the main characters Judith, Susie, and Becks.
> What are you currently reading?
Cozy Up to Blood by Colin Conway, read by Damon Abdullah: Cozy Up series. The American protagonist, in witness protection, has to be moved and given a new identity in each book due to his propensity to get involved in solving a murder, thus alerting his former criminal motorcycle gang to his location. A different twist on the cozy genre, although cats are abundant. Just started this one.

Probably the next in the Angela Marchmont series by Clara Benson: The Riddle at Gipsy’s Mile, read by Elizabeth Klett. English murder mysteries in Golden Age style.

Bonus: the book I most enjoyed recently, The Case of the Canterfell Codicil by P.J. Fitzsimmons, read by Tim Bruce. English locked room mystery with a delightfully Bertie Wooster-ish amateur detective.

Irene: 1. The last book I read was “All The Colors of The Dark” by Chris Whittaker. Fabulous, can’t put down book. Highly recommend.

2. I am currently reading “Worst Case Scenario” by T.J. Newman. Scary that this can actually happen.

3. Next book I’m going to read is “Passions in Death: An Eve Dallas novel” by J. D. Robb.

Brenda: The last book I finished was Pagasa by F. X. Holden. This is the penultimate book in his This is the Future of War series. I really get hooked on these books, and sometimes they’re closer to current times than we’d like to think. This book takes place in the South China Sea and the island of Pagasa. If you like Tom Clancy’s books, these are similar.

I’m currently reading Spirit Crossing by William Kent Krueger. This is the 20th book in the Cork O’Connor series, and I’ve read them all. The characters are like old friends. I have to say the title worries me a bit.

Next book? I don’t know. I actually don’t plan ahead. Depends on my mood, or if I need a shorter quicker book, or something different than the previous book, or if it’s a library book with a deadline. I might use What’s Next at Book Notification. Might peruse my Kindle or my bookshelf. Something will strike my fancy!

Beth: What was the last book you read? The Shopkeeper’s Daughter by Wanda E. Brunstetter (for a feel good read)

What are you currently reading? The Night Librarian by Christopher Lincoln. In the library this is classified as a Juvenile Graphic Novel, but I recommend it to adults as well. The literary references are surprising and cause me to remember when I read the particular book. Then trying to remember the characters in each book. The author’s note states that he is 71 years old as he publishes his first graphic novel. His illustrations move his story along so well. I enjoyed reading it.

What’s the next book you are planning on reading? Murder on Lexington Avenue by Victoria Thompson. Thank you for letter us know of her passing. These Gaslight Mysteries move so well with well developed characters. I will be sad when I get to the end of the series.

Deborah: I listen to audiobooks. I prefer to listen to series that have several books in them and I listen to one series at a time. I try to wait until I have the entire series before starting them.

I started listening to this series to give myself a break from the historical Scottish Romance rut I’d gotten into. I love them but when I could tell approximately what year it was (even when an author didn’t specify) based on what was happening I figured it was time for a break. Another romance series didn’t really appeal so I decided to dive back into mystery/thrillers and The Mindhunters is a great series to get lost in.

MW: The last book I read was The Spy Coast by Tess Gerritsen which was excellent.
The book I am currently reading is Every Last Devil by Alex Smith, the latest in the Robbie Kett series. Really enjoy this series.
My next read will be The Bordeaux Book Club by Gillian Harvey. No idea what it will be like but I am a sucker for books with book Club, book shop or library in the title

Mary Ann: for this months question:
1, last book read was Assassins Anonymous by Rob Hart
2, currently reading The Mystery Writer by Sulari Gentill
3next book toss up between You Will Never Be Me by Jesse Q. Santanto or How to Solve Your Own Murder by Kristen Perrin.

I enjoyed Rob Hart’s book but was not crazy about the way he ended it. Maybe a sequel is coming?
I’ve read one of Gentill’s previous books and am enjoying this one so far.
I’ve read Santanto’s series and am anxious to see how she handles a standalone and as for Perrin she is a new author for me.

Linda: Just read “Resurrection Walk” by Connelly. It was The Lincoln Lawyer book. Very good read. I loved the plot and the ending. I am reading “The Tea Will Tell” in the Tearoom Mysteery series by Guidepost. I have varied reading tastes. The next book is hopefully in the mail. It will be the next Mitch Rapp book. I cannot wait. I have had a good month of reading mostly cozy mystery books this mont

John: The last book I read (just a couple days ago) was “The Nature of the Beast” by Louise Penny. It’s the eleventh in her Chief Inspector Gamache series, which gets better with each and every book. The humanity of her characters just comes through so clearly, wrapped around simple, but elegant, lifestyles.
I’m currently reading “Eve” by Cat Bohannon. An exhaustive but interesting treatise on the evolution of the human Female. Two hundred years of science, and I still don’t have a clue about what makes my Lovely Wife tick!
Next up, I’ll give my Feeble Brain a break, and read “The Convent’s Secret” by CJ Archer. It’s the next entry in the Glass and Steele series. They’re fun easy reads, set in the 19th century, where Magic, mixed with Romance and Dastardly Villains, complicate the life of our sweet Heroine and her extended family. Like eating a warm bowl of oatmeal, sitting on the floor in your PJ’s! Stay Well, and Read Everyday, Everyone!

What was the last book you read?
Trapper Road: A Stillhouse Lake Novel By: Rachel Caine, Carrie Ryan Will be curious to see how this series continues with Carrie Ryan taking the reins. I enjoyed Rachel Caine’s writing.

What are you currently reading?
Fatal Intrusion: A Novel (Sanchez & Heron, Book 1) By: Jeffery Deaver, Isabella Maldonado Just started this. I enjoyed the Lincoln Rhyme series. We’ll see how this goes.

What’s the next book you are planning on reading? Passions in Death by J.D. Robb I really do enjoy this series. A good blend of mystery and levity. I love a book that can make me laugh out loud while trying to work out a mystery.

It’s been a season of new books in series. Also, read Spirit Crossing by William Kent Krueger (was actually crying at the end) and This is Why We Lied (Will Trent) by Karin Slaughter

Mark Kelland: The last book I read was Fire and Bones by Kathy Reich – fans of her will enjoy it but I am a little tired of the same characters and choppy writing style.

Currently I am reading Worst Case Scenario by T.J. Newman – a gripping thriller about a plane crash into a nuclear facility and how a small rural community copes. I am really enjoying it.

Next up will be the latest joint Kellerman book (Jonathan and Jesse), the Lost Coast

Tom: Good day. I recently read The Bone Code by Kathy Reichs. I am currently reading All The Glimmering Stars by Mark Sullivan and next I will read Last Green Valley also by Sullivan. Yes, the Fall is very stimulating as long as it doesn’t get here too quick but lasts awhile when it does.

Diane: The last book I read was William Kent Krueger’s Spirit Crossing.
I am currently reading Paul Doiron’s Pitch Dark.
My next book will be Kurt Johnson’s The Barrens.

Jean: Last book I read: The Cuillin Dead (D.I. Duncan McAdam series) by J M Dalgliesh. Not the best in the series but still a good one.

Current book I’m reading: Borderlines (Joe Gunther series) by Archer Mayor. Off to a good start.

Next book I’m planning to read: Spirit Crossing (Cork O’Connor series) by William Kent Krueger. Have very high expectations for this one.

Guess you can tell I’m currently into series, no standalones on the horizon.

Jackie: The last book I read was STRIKING RANGE by Margaret Mizushima. I am currently reading THE WOMAN IN THE GARDEN by Jill Johnson. My next book I plan to read is Jacqueline Winspear’s THE WHITE LADY.
