The Amelia Peabody is a series of historical mystery novels by American novelist Elizabeth Peters. The protagonist, Amelia Peabody, is an Egyptologist. Born in England to a wealthy family, Amelia leaves to travel around the world. The series is primarily set in Egypt, but also in England and Palestine.

The Amelia Peabody series began in 1975 with Crocodile on the Sandbank. The series has lasted 19 books, picking up in 1996 as an annual series. The Amelia Peabody series is currently ongoing.     I didn’t know the author had died until just last year. I was devastated. I wondered why there weren’t new books coming out. I just finished The Painted Queen. Bravo. I can’t tell where “Elizabeth” began and Joan picked up. I recently introduced my 26-year-old daughter to the series and she is about 4 books in. I never got tired of Amelia Peabody. This was by far my favorite of the different series.

    Yes, agree with Rose Ann, these are among my all time favorites, I’ve read the whole series many more times than once!!! Every few years I go back to it!!!

    The author, Elizabeth Peters, DID have a Ph.D in Egyptology, but never was able to use it, until she used what she had learned in this series! She did also write a few non fiction books on ancient Egypt…..”Red Land/ Black Land” is excellent….
