Akwaeke Emezi is a video artist and author who debuted on the scene with their autobiographical novel Freshwater. The book was named a New York Times Notable Book and was also named a Best Book of the Year by the New Yorker, NPR, the Chicago Public Library, and Buzzfeed.
In addition to the book’s success, Freshwater was also put into development at FX for an adaption as a television show. Emezi was born in Umuahia and raised in Aba, Nigeria. Emezi was also honored by the National Book Foundation, appearing on their “5 Under 35” list.

Freshwater was Emezi’s debut novel. The book tells the story of Ada, a strange child that is making her southern Nigerian family very worried about her. She is prone to violent fits and they say she is born with “one foot on the other side”. This quality has her developing separate selves within her as she grows up. She travels to America for college as he gets older and a traumatic event on campus empowers the selves within her into something powerful and potentially dangerous as Ada herself fades into the background of her own mind.
Emezi made her YA debut with Pet. In this story, Jam and her friend Redemption have grown up with the lesson that there are no monsters in their city, not anymore. They have always believed this to be true until Jam meets Pet. Pet is a creature made of horns and claws who emerges one day from a mixutre of one her mother’s paintings and a drop of Jam’s blood. Pet has emerged to hunt a monster and it may reside in Redemption’s house. Jam seeks the truth and to protect her best friend, but how does one fight monsters when no one believes they exist?
