The Hate U Give is the story of Starr Carter, a girl who lives between two worlds. One of her worlds is the poor neighborhood where she lives and the other is at the fancy suburban prep school that she attends. Her worlds are thrown when she witnesses the murder of a childhood friend by a police officer when her friend was unarmed. The death is national news and they are trying to paint her friend as a drug deal or gang banger, but she knows better. Everyone wants to know what really went down that night and Starr is the only one who knows the truth. What she says will change not only her life, but that of her neighborhood.
On the Come Up is Thomas’ second novel and follows a young girl named Bri who wants to be a rapper. Life is tough for Bri with a father who died when she was young, a poor mother, and a reputation as a hoodlum. She decides to pour her heart into a song. That song goes viral, but it ends up being for the wrong reasons and she becomes the center of controversy.
