Lady Anne Glenconner was named as the Lady in Waiting to Princess Margaret in 1971, a role she held until the Princess’s death in 2002. She wrote Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown in 2019 because she was fed up with people writing horrible things about Princess Margaret and wanted to set the record straight.

Anne was born to her father, Thomas W.E. Coke, the 5th Earl of Leicester and her mother, Elizabeth Mary (Yorke) Tennant, Countess of Leicester. She served as the maid of honour at the coronation of Elizabeth II in 1953 and went on to serve as Princess Margaret’s Lady in Waiting. She would marry Lord Glenconner in 1956 and the couple would have five children together, three of whom survive. The couple transformed the island of Mustique into a paradise for the rich and famous where Princess Margaret built a home there.

Lady in Waiting: My Extraordinary Life in the Shadow of the Crown is Anne Glenconner’s extraordinary memoir of her time as a member of the royal circle and her relationship with Princess Margaret. She spent her entire life in the royal circle ever since befriending the future Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Princess Margaret as a child. Her father controlled one of the largest estates in England, but she was deemed a great disappointment and unable to inherit. Anne was a witness to many of the landmark moments in royal history and her own life encompassed much drama and tragedy. Anne was Princess Margaret’s closest confidante and she shares many stories from that time. She also tells the story of her own marriage to the unfaithful Colin Tennant who left his fortune to a former servant, losing two songs, and much more. A very unique, insider’s look into the world of the royal family.
