Catherine Lacey is an American author best known for writing the novels Nobody Is Ever Missing, The Answers, Certain American States, and Pew. Lacey was a 2019 Guggenheim Fellow, as well as a recipient of the Whiting Award. She also and earned an artists’ fellowship from the New York Foundation for the Arts.
Lacey was named by Granta Magazine as one of their “Best of Young American Novelists” in 2017.In addition to her work as a novelist, she has also had works published in a variety of places including The New Yorker and Harper’s. Lacey also taught fiction writing at Columbia University, The University of Montana, and The University of Mississippi.

Nobody Is Ever Missing tells the story of Elyria who takes a one-way flight to New Zealand. She leaves behind her stable life in New York and that includes her husband who is left wondering what happened. Elyria decides to try hitchhiking, sleeping in fields, and doing all kinds of things that she wouldn’t do in her own life. Elyria is haunted by her sister’s death and consumed by an inner rage. The situations she encounters in New Zealand send her deeper into her own mind and she starts having some wild thoughts, the one that dominates them all and becomes an obsession is: If her truest self is invisible and unknowable to others, is she even alive?
One of the best review books of Lacey’s career is The Answers. This book introduces us to Mary Parson who is completely broke. She is pushed to the brink and overwhelmed with debt. She heads to a holistic treatment called Pneuma Adaptive Kinesthesia to try and get help and it works. It’s expensive though and she’s on the look for a second job. She answers an ad that for an Emotional Girlfriend as part of a Girlfriend Experiment. This is the brainchild of a wealthy actor who has hired a team of biotech researchers to solve the problem of how to build and maintain the perfect romantic relationship. She joins a whole team of girlfriends in the experiment as she struggles to even understand herself.
