Edgar Wallace was an English crime writer, war correspondent, journalist, screenwriter and much more in his lifetime.
Wallace left school at the age of just 12 and joined the army at 21. He would work as a war correspondent during the Second Boer War for the Daily Mail and also Reuters. Wallace then found himself in debt and left the war beat to return to London where he would begin writing thrillers to raise his income with his breakthrough being the book The Four Just Men. He was a very prolific writer in his time with over 50 million copies sold of his works and one of the greatest authors in the history of the United Kingdom. Walace passed away in 1932 in Beverly Hills. In an interesting trivia note, he was working on the film that would become King Kong for RKO Pictures at the time.

If You Like Edgar Wallace Books, You’ll Love…
Sanders of the River was one of Wallace’s more popular books. The book sees Commissioner Sanders who is sent by the British Government to Africa to keep an eye on “cannibal folk” who think of the white man as the equivalent to unicorns as they’d never seen one until ten years ago. The book captures the feelings of the time as world powers were vying for colonial honor and control.
The aforementioned The Four Just Men was one of Wallace’s earliest hits. The book tells the tales of four men who are committed to making sure that public figures remain as upright as they are. This book sees the men threaten to kill a minister if he passes an unjust law. The minister does what he can to save himself, but whether he succeeds or not makes for an excellent and clever thriller.
