If You Like Elise Hooper Books, You’ll Love…
The Other Alcott was Hooper’s debut novel. The story takes place in the world of Louisa May Alcott, the famous author of Little Women. That story is based on May Alcott’s own life with the lead character based on herself. Another Little Women character, Amy, is considered to be people’s least favorite and that character is based on Louisa’s sister May. Hooper’s book is a work of biographical fiction that gets to know the other sister. May is a talented artist who faces scorn for entering a man’s profession. The success of her sister’s book helps out the family, but does Amy no favors. She’s left wondering if this is what her sister really thinks of her and sets out to discover her own identity in the world.
Hooper is also the author of Fast Girls. This book takes place during the 1928 Olympics as Betty Robinson is competing as a member of the first-ever women’s delegation in track and field, but a plane crash could cost her everything. While outside of Boston a girl named Louise Stokes, a black girl, sees competing as a way to break out of the limitations placed on her. While in Missouri, an awkward tomboy named Helen looks to escape her farm life for the Olympics. Betty, Louise, and Helen will all compete for the chance to be the fastest women in the world amidst the Nazi-sponsored 1936 Olympics in Berlin.
