Greg Keyes Synopses: Newton’s Cannon by J. Gregory Keyes is the first book in the Age of Unreason series. In 1681, Sir Isaac Newton, the brilliant mind who reshaped science, delves into the mystical world of alchemy. His experiments with the Philosopher’s Mercury, a mysterious and powerful substance, grant him control over the elemental forces of Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. But his discovery does not remain a secret for long. Both England and France, locked in a deadly rivalry, seek to wield the Philosopher’s Mercury as a weapon of unimaginable power. To answer France’s call, King Louis XIV commissions a devastating device known only as Newton’s Cannon.
Far from the political machinations of Europe, a young apprentice named Benjamin Franklin uncovers a dangerous secret tied to these alchemical forces. When a sinister foe—equal parts sorcerer and scientist—begins hunting him, Ben is forced to flee for his life. His only hope lies in seeking out Sir Isaac Newton in England, but even Newton is in grave danger. Others have dabbled with the Philosopher’s Mercury long before Newton, beings who disdain both science and humanity. They have awoken, and they are determined to destroy both the weapon and the men who wield it.
As the battle for control over the primal forces of the universe escalates, Ben and Newton must confront enemies that transcend the laws of science, with the fate of mankind hanging in the balance.
The Waterborn by Greg Keyes is the first book in the Chosen of the Changeling series. Hezhi is no ordinary princess—her royal bloodline traces back to the god known as the River, and with it flows a magical power that will awaken as she nears adulthood. In her world, this gift will either secure her place within the royal court or condemn her to the terrifying depths beneath the palace. But when her cousin D’en is mysteriously kidnapped by the priests and taken to the forbidden underworld of the River, Hezhi refuses to let him be lost to the darkness. She sets out on a dangerous journey to rescue him, knowing she cannot face the godly forces alone.
Enter Perkar, a fierce barbarian warrior who is deeply in love with a goddess of the stream. When the mighty River threatens to annihilate his beloved, Perkar embarks on a desperate quest to save her, one that will bring him face to face with Hezhi. Together, they must challenge the god of the River itself, navigating a perilous path filled with ancient power, divine conflict, and the looming presence of fate. Only by joining forces can they hope to confront the River and reclaim their loved ones, but the cost of such defiance may be greater than they can imagine.
The Wind that Sweeps the Stars is a standalone novel by Greg Keyes. Yash of Zeltah enters the fortress city of Honaq as an outsider, seen by the court as nothing more than a barbarian bride meant to secure a fragile peace. Her marriage to Prince Chej is portrayed as a diplomatic arrangement to stop the conflict tearing the land apart. But Yash knows the truth—the war has already begun, and the only way to truly save her people is to take drastic, deadly action.
A highly trained assassin with unmatched skills, Yash is no ordinary princess. Her mission is clear and unforgiving: she must secretly eliminate the powerful masters of the nine towers who wield deadly plagues, potent magic, and command monstrous forces. She must navigate the treacherous halls of Honaq and kill those who stand in her way without raising suspicion, including the immortal emperor himself. With the fate of Zeltah hanging in the balance, Yash’s deadly dance through the shadows is the only hope of her people’s survival. The success of her mission depends on her ability to outwit and outfight the forces of an entire empire, or else see her homeland fall into ruin.
