Order of Harry Bosch Books
Harry Bosch is the protagonist in a series of crime fiction/police procedural novels by American novelist Michael Connelly. Readers might be more familiar of Connelly’s work due to the movie about his character Mickey Haller, but make no (city of!) bones about it – the bread and butter of Michael Connelly, and his best character by far, is LAPD detective Harry Bosch.
Michael Connelly began the Harry Bosch series with the novel The Black Echo, which was published in 1992. The series is currently ongoing. Below is a list of Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch books in order of when they were originally released (which is the same as their chronological order):

Years ago I couldn’t seem to get into reading the Bosch series. I faithfully watched every episode on Amazon. I really enjoyed it. I noticed you wrote that Titus Weliver reads the Bosch books! Is that all of them? He makes a great Bosch in the tv series.

I hadn’t read anything by Michael Connelly, nor had I watched the Bosch series on Prime. You had blogged that you reread the series and found it as good as the first time you read them. Interested, I picked up the first in the series, Black Echo – now I’m nine books in and am addicted. Thank you so much for the suggestion!

It took me three books to fall in love with Harry, but then I did and I love Harry Bosch. Possible fav of them all.
Like any series and any author, if it is an ongoing character it sometimes helps to start with the first and read in sequence. However, I rarely do and it seems to work for me. But not everyone can do this. And, like any series/author, not all of the books are on the same par/really good. I find that in any on going series there are always a few that seem to have gotten written just to fill the quota/year/contract. that can sometimes deter the reader. But just put that one down, and go on to the next, it usually works. I read 2 to 3 novels a week and I burn through a lot of authors and in every case where there is a main character/ongoing series I have found this to be true. Even with the Vince Flynn/Mitch Rapp series. Also, if you read that series, The Survivor, written by Kyle Miles is just O.K. What I don’t like is that he changed Rapp’s “personality”. Try to muddle thru because the last 100 pages turn out pretty good. Hopefully the next one will be better.
I am confused in City of Bones Bosch has a 15 yr old daughter in Lost Light he finds out he has a 4 year old daughter. What am I missing?
I think that the age of the daughter was one of (quite a few) things that Connelly changed for TV (eg: no moustache. Can you not be sexy with a moustache these days?). The teenage daughter does feature in later novels, but the chronology has been completely changed in any case (Novel 1 – the Black Echo – is now season three). I don’t think it’s too much of a problem personally – you just have to treat the two things as belonging to different universes.
The books and the character of Bosch have a way of growing on you. Perhaps start with number 1 if you want to give it another go.
People have tried to get me to read this series. I started with City of Bones and it was alright, but it just seemed to be one long story with no cliffhangers or emotional peaks. Did I start in the wrong place?
