Jean-Luc Bannalec is a German author, but the name is actually a pen name for a German writer named Jorg Bong. He debuted with his first novel, Death in Brittany (also known as Death in Pont-Aven) which is the first book in the Brittany Mystery series.
Bannalec/Bong divides his time between his home of Germany and the coastal Brittany in Northwestern France which inspired these novels. His first book debuted in Germany at first where it was a huge hit, selling over six hundred thousand copies, which led to it being published in other languages.

Death in Brittany is the first book in the series and the first published case of Commissaire Georges Dupin. He is a cantankerous man who enjoys a fine cup of coffee, but one day he is taking from his coffee to the scene of a curious murder. The victim is a 91-year old hotelier named Pierre and the small town is in shock. It is the height of tourist season in Pont-Aven and the murder is not good for business. Dupin has a job to do though and he’ll look to solve the case by delving into the life of the victim. There he will uncover a web of secrecy that wouldn’t seem possible for a small village as this.
Another case for Dupin is The Fluer de Sel Murders. This book sees Dupin taking a trip to the “white country”, the salt marshes of the Guérande Peninsula, on a getaway. Trouble finds him when he’s attacked in the salt works. He is ask for help by a journalist friend to have a look around, but when the friend goes missing he has a whole other case on his hands. In the strange town, he’ll have to work alongside the local investigator to figure out what’s going on in the salt works.
