Dread Nation is the New York Times Bestseller from Ireland. The book takes place with the country on the brink. It is an alternate history where the dead starting walking during the Civil War which lead to the end of the War Between the States and changed the nation forever. Laws like the Native and Negro Education Act required children to attend combat schools to learn to put down the dead. There is more opportunity for previously segregated communities which is why Jane wants to become an Attendant, trained in both weaponry and etiquette to protect the well-to-do. She doesn’t want that life though, even as certain eastern cities hold dreams of returning America back to how it was before the dead rose. When families start going missing, Jane finds herself in the middle of a conspiracy where the walking dead will be the least of her problems.
Ireland is also the author of the Devils’ Pass series and one of the books is called Evie Allen vs. the Quiz Bowl Zombies. This book sees Evie Allen, the star of her school’s quiz bowl team, dealing with a team of zombies who need brains to survive.
