If You Like Samira Ahmed Books, You’ll Love…
Love, Hate, and Other Filters is Ahmed’s debut novel. It tells the story of young Maya Aziz, a 17-year old Muslim-American high school student. The book tells a moving story of a young girl torn between worlds. Her parents want her to marry a nice Indian boy and go to a college somewhere close while she dreams of moving to New York City and attending film school. When a great tragedy happens thousands of miles away, perpetrated by Muslims, she finds her whole world turned upside as friends and neighbors are ruled by fear and Islamophobia. Through all this, Maya must find the strength to find where she belongs and who she truly is.
Ahmed folowed that book up with Internment which tells another tough tale of being Muslim in America. This one is set in a near-future as the war on terror has gotten so bad that Muslim Americans are locked up in internment camp. Young Layla Amin is separated from her boyfriend on the outside and trapped in these walls, Layla makes some new friends and unlikely alliances. She must fight for her freedom and that of the others who did nothing wrong.
