If You Like Tehlor Kay Mejia Books, You’ll Love…
We Set the Dark is Mejia’s dynamic debut. The book takes place at the Medio School for Girls where are trained for one of two roles: running a household or raising children. Both paths offer a life of comfort and luxury, but not much else. Daniela Vargas is the school’s top student, but she is hidden a secret that could get her sent back to the fringes of society. As graduation looms and she has some difficult choices to make, she is approached by a resistance group to spy for them against the school. The group is desperately trying to bring equality to the school, something that she wants as well, but there is a lot at stake her and she will have to give up everything she has striven for in order to do it.
Tehlor is also the author of Paola Santiago and the River of Tears which is a middle grade book about a science-obsessed girl with a very superstitious mom. Her mom has warned her for her whole life about La Llorona, the wailing ghost woman who wanders the banks of the river looking for children. She is careful around the river and always has been, but doesn’t believe her mother until the night when her friend goes missing and she sees something staring at her near the river.
