This series is just wonderful! Susan Hill does not coddle us with recaps of everything that has gone before, she instead uses inference, subtle reference and character to explain where we are in the present. In The Various Haunts of Men, the first Serailler book, she does the unthinkable, killing off a sympathetic protagonist before the end of the story – and that is just the beginning of what turns out to be a unique and addictive addition to the “mystery” genre. Why are the best writers always English?
I just discovered him and I read a lot of mysteries. So far I really like the characters as well as the mystery.
This Simon Serrailler series of detective/ mysteries set in modern England is just fantastic. Don’t know why this author isn’t better known….she ought to be!!!
Yes maybe because not transferred to TV? Tho I think they’d be terrific adapted for TV.
