British novelist Colin Dexter has revealed that the late John Thaw will be the only actor to ever play the role of Inspector Morse. Well, at least in the way we know him.

The author feels that the actor played the character so well that he has stipulated that the 33 ITV episodes he appeared in cannot be remade.

“There are going to be no remakes of the Morse stories we have put on TV,” said Dexter. “There are a few sentences in my will. If people want the originals they know where they are.”

However, Dexter agreed to a prequel series titled Endeavour, but only because itdepicts Morse as a young officer and will not be a remake of any previous work.

The Inspector Morse ITV series started in 1987 and ended in 2000.
