Order of Michael Chabon Books
Michael Chabon is an American author of literary fiction and children’s novels. Aside from his novels and children’s books, he has also written and published screenplays, comics and newspaper serials. Michael realized he wanted to be a writer after writing a short story for school at age 10, and never looked back. Chabon attended Carnegie Mellon University, but transferred to the University of Pittsburgh and earned his B.A. under Chuck Kinder in 1984. He then got his M.F.A. in creative writing from the University of California, Irvine. Although Michael is known for his literary fiction, he is a strong defender of genre fiction. Michael lives in Berkeley, California with his wife, novelist Ayelet Waldman, and their four children. (more…)
Order of Eva Ibbotson Books
Eva Ibbotson (1925-2010) was a British novelist of romance and children’s/YA fantasy novels. Eva was born in Vienna, Austria, but her family moved to England when Hitler gained power. She was educated at Bedford College, Cambridge University and the University of Durham. She had originally wanted to be a physiologist, but when she realized the amount of animal testing that she would have to do, she changed her mind. Eva ended up getting married and raising a family and becoming a teacher. She began as a television writer, and 10 years later, a children’s writer. Her books are imaginative and humourous, and most of them feature magical creatures and places (even though she did not like thinking about the supernatural), and created the characters because she wanted to decrease her readers’ fear of such things. Rebecca Stead is an American author of children’s novels. She grew up in New York City, where she would quickly fall in love with fiction. Rebecca would grow up to become a public defender, while she was writing as a hobby. However, her young song pushed her laptop off the table, causing her to lose everything she had written. In order to cheer herself up, she went to a local bookstore and bought everything she loved when she was a kid. She went back, and bought more. Then she began to write. Beverly Jenkins is an American author of historical and contemporary romance novels. Her novels feature African-American characters and are often set in periods that are often overlooked. This didn’t make it any easy for her to get published, as publishers were only looking for historical African-American novels to be set during slavery. She writes the Blessings series. Beverly was born in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Cass Technical High School and then majored in Journalism and English Literature at Michigan State University. Immediately after debuting, she was compared to some of the greatest fantasy novelists of all time. Aside from being a writer, Haydon is also a herbalist, harpist and madrigal singer. Order of Iceberg Slim Books
Iceberg Slim was the pseudonym of Robert Beck (1918-1992), who wrote crime fiction and non-fiction books. Slim was a pimp who took his real-life experiences and parlayed them into a writing career. His name comes from his calm demeanor in intense situations, as well as his body type. He was successful in part due to his ability to conceal his emotions. He retired from pimping after a stint in jail, believing he was too old for the job and his competition was more ruthless. His common-law wife, Betty Shue, convinced him to write his life story as a novel (even helping him write it). Apparently, Slim made himself two promises in writing his memoirs – not to glamourize the life he left behind and not to snitch. (more…)

Jonathan Franzen is an American author of literary fiction and non-fiction books. He was born near Chicago and grew up outside of St. Louis, Missouri. After graduating from Swarthmore College in 1981, he studied at the Freie Universitat in Berlin as a Fulbright scholar and later worked in a seismology lab at Harvard University’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. Amanda Carmack is an American author of historical mystery novels. She writes the Kate Haywood Elziabethan Mysteries series. She also writes as Amanda McCabe and Laurel McKee. Amanda became interested in the Tudors after happening upon “Anne of the Thousand Days” on TV as a kid. She wishes she could live with them, but writing about them is a close second. When not writing or reading, Amanda enjoys yoga, collecting souvenirs from travelling and watching the Food Network (while not actually cooking). She lives in Oklahoma with a menagerie of pets.
