This didn’t make it any easy for her to get published, as publishers were only looking for historical African-American novels to be set during slavery. She writes the Blessings series. Beverly was born in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Cass Technical High School and then majored in Journalism and English Literature at Michigan State University. Iceberg Slim was the pseudonym of Robert Beck (1918-1992), who wrote crime fiction and non-fiction books. Slim was a pimp who took his real-life experiences and parlayed them into a writing career. His name comes from his calm demeanor in intense situations, as well as his body type. He was successful in part due to his ability to conceal his emotions. He retired from pimping after a stint in jail, believing he was too old for the job and his competition was more ruthless. His common-law wife, Betty Shue, convinced him to write his life story as a novel (even helping him write it). Apparently, Slim made himself two promises in writing his memoirs – not to glamourize the life he left behind and not to snitch. (more…)

He finished high school at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools and attended the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, earning his BFA in 1984. When Daniel was four years old, he had an emotional response to a Strange Adventures comic where a family died of heat. His first professional work was for Cracked, which he worked for from 1985 until 1989. Wallace began selling stories to magazines when he was a teenager. During World II, he served alongside Theodor Seuss Geisel (better known as Dr. Seuss) – all the while still writing for magazines. After the war, Wallace became a Hollywood screenwriter. He collaborated on such films as The West Point Story, Split Second, and Meet Me at the Fair.
