Pearl S Buck
Pearl S. Buck (1892–1973) was an American author of literary fiction, non-fiction and children’s books. She won the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howells Medal for her novel The Good Earth. Pearl was the daughter of American missionaries and spent much of her early life in China, which is where she set the majority of her novels and wrote about in non-fiction books. Following civil unrest in China, Buck returned to the United States in 1934. She also supported many causes, including civil rights, women’s rights and helping to establish Welcome House, the first international/interracial adoption agency. Buck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938, making her the first American woman to receive such an honour. She died in Vermont in 1973. (more…)

Mary Poppins is considered to be the quintessential English nanny by many, but she is capable of many feats of magic, including flying in on an umbrella. In the series, she works as a nanny to the Banks children, who live on Cherry Tree Lane. P.L. Travers (1899-1996) was an Australian-English author of children’s books. She is best known for creating Mary Poppins. Travers began getting her poems published as a teenager in multiple publications. At the same time, she was also making a name for herself as an actress. After touring Australia and New Zealand, she left Australia for England in 1924. It would be after settling in England that she would begin writing Mary Poppins stories. Travers’ story was made into the movie Saving Mr. Banks, where she was portrayed by Emma Thompson (opposite Tom Hanks as Walt Disney). (more…)

The editor, Pierre-Jules Hetzel, said that the idea of the series was “to outline all the geographical, geological, physical, and astronomical knowledge amassed by modern science and to recount, in an entertaining and picturesque format … the history of the universe.” The books are made with extreme addition to detail, combined with a love for exploration.
