Thomas A. (T.A.) Barron is an American author of YA fantasy novels and nature-themed non-fiction books. He writes the Merlin Saga, Atlantis Saga and the Heroic Adventures of Kate series. Barron grew up in Massachusetts and Colorado and quickly gained a great appreciation for nature and the natural world. He attended Princeton University and Balliol College, Oxford University (as a Rhodes Scholar) and earned his business and law degrees from Harvard University. Doc Savage is the protagonist in a series of action-adventure pulp fiction novels written under the house name of Kenneth Robeson. The character was created by Henry Ralston, John Nanovic and Lester Dent (who wrote the majority of the novels in the series’ original run). Clark “Doc” Savage, Jr. has a genius-level IQ, is in perfect physical shape, is a skilled scientist, surgeon, inventor, detective and martial artist. Kenneth Robeson is a house name belonging to Street and Smith Publications. The Kenneth Robeson house name was used on the cover of the Doc Savage and The Avenger series. Most of the Doc Savage novels were written by Lester Dent, but other authors who contributed to the series include William G. Bogart, Evelyn Coulson, Harold A. Davis, Lawrence Donovan, Philip Jose Farmer, Alan Hathaway, W. Ryerson Johnson and Will Murray. In addition, The Avenger stories were written by Paul Ernst and Ron Goulart. (more…)
Order of Lester Dent Books
Lester Dent (1904-1959) was an American author of pulp fiction. He is best known for his contributions to the Doc Savage series (writing as Kenneth Robeson). Dent went to college for business, intending to be a banker. While he was standing in line to apply, he discovered that telegraph operators made $20 more than bankers, so he decided to major in telegraphy. It was as he was working as a telegrapher for the Associated Press that he noticed how much writers made by writing for pulp magazines and began writing during slow hours. It wasn’t long before he was writing exclusively for Dell Publishing for $500 per month. Following Dell ceasing publication of their pulp magazines, he was contacted by Street and Smith Publications about writing a pulp magazine for an adventure hero – a hero that would end up becoming Doc Savage. Although the magazines were published under the house name of Kenneth Robeson, Dent was paid $500 (and later $750) per novel. (more…)
