Stuart M Kaminsky
Stuart M. Kaminsky (1934-2009) was an American author of mystery novels, crime fiction and non-fiction books, as well as a film professor. His series characters are Toby Peters, Inspector Rostnikov, Abe Lieberman and Lew Fonesca. He was awarded the title of Grand Master by the Mystery Writers of America. Kaminsky grew up in Chicago, where he got his Ph.D in speech from Northwestern University. He got his B.S. in journalism and M.A. in English from the University of Illinois. He went on to teach film studies at Northwestern for 16 years and followed that up with a six year stint at Florida State. At one point, Kaminsky served as president of Mystery Writers of America. John Birmingham
John Birmingham is a British-Australian author of science fiction, alternate history, crime fiction and non-fiction. His first taste of being published was in a student newspaper at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, where he wrote stories. He then began writing articles for Rolling Stone and the Australian edition of Penthouse. However, he would gain his most notoriety for He Died With a Felafel in His Hand, a memoir that was adapted into a stageplay, film and graphic novel. He has also written a trilogy called the Axis of Time, an alternate history/techno-thriller series. He even included authors from the genres as minor characters in the trilogy. (more…)

Philip K. Dick Novel Gets Syfy Adaptation

The Hugo award-winning alternate history classic The Man in the High Castle by Philip K. Dick will be adapted into a four-hour mini-series by Syfy.

Frank Spotnitz, a producer on X-Files, will write and executive produce the adaptation. Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions will produce alongside Headline Pictures, Electric Shepherd Productions and FremantleMedia International.

The release states:

Producers Ridley Scott and Stewart Mackinnon bring us a startling depiction of an alternate history as imagined by author Philip K. Dick in his best-selling novel; a world in which Nazi Germany and Japan were victorious in World War II. The year is 1962 and the Axis Powers occupy the United States, where fascism rules and the few surviving Jews hide under assumed names.

DC Comics Responds To Orson Scott Card Backlash

DC Comics received criticism recently for hiring anti-gay advocate Orson Scott Card to write for a Superman comic.

“As content creators we steadfastly support freedom of expression, however the personal views of individuals associated with DC Comics are just that – personal views – and not those of the company itself,” DC told the Advocate. (more…)

Darkover is a planet that is habitable by humans – the only of the seven planets that orbit a red giant star known as Cottman that humans can inhabit. The humans that colonized the planet were mostly Celtic and Spanish. Marion Zimmer Bradley
Marion Zimmer Bradley was an American author of fantasy, science fiction and speculative fiction, as well as some gay & lesbian pulp fiction novels (which were controversial at the time) under various pseudonyms. Feminist views were a common theme in Bradley’s fiction. Bradley is best known for her Darkover series and to a lesser degree, her Avalon series. She also edited the long-running Sword and Sorceress anthology, which gave Mercedes Lackey her start as a published author. Bradley passed away in 1999 at the age of 69 after years of failing health. Alan Russell
Alan Russell is an American author of crime fiction/mystery novels. Alan Russell played basketball at UC San Diego and made the team as a freshman, but had to quit due to a back injury. He ended up writing the student newspaper instead and ended up being the paper’s editor-in-chief. During his tenure, the paper went independent and eventually became known as The Guardian. After graduation, Russell worked in hospitality. Meanwhile, he wrote and sold articles for newspapers and magazines while working on novels. He used his experience in hospitality as a backdrop for his novels. In addition to his novels, Alan Russell has also ghostwritten some non-fiction books. (more…)
